Served with the rank of Colonel in the Civil War as Commanding Officer of the 2nd Vermont Infantry Regiment, 1861-1865. Was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his exemplary service at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19, 1864.
